Brian Taylor Talks Ghost Rider; Teases Crank 3

Movieline has a great interview with Brian Taylor, director of the second Ghost Rider film (currently in post-production) and the awesomely ridiculous high-octane Crank films.

Ghost Rider

Ghost Rider: Spirit of Vengeance sees Nicolas Cage return as Johnny Blaze; the flame headed, demon bonded, skull head on a bike who made a deal with a devil in the first film. However, Taylor has confirmed that this film is more of a reboot than a sequel, despite the film being set several years later.

"We basically completely re-envisioned the whole start of the character, and actually had to re-engineer the origin of the Ghost Rider", says Taylor, who is not a fan of the mythology from the comics. With a screenplay penned by David S. Goyer (Blade, The Dark Knight), and a promise from Taylor that Spirit of Vengeance will have a more evolved Ghost Rider, few fans will be complaing of changes. The first feature film was generally considered a disappointment, despite Cage being great fun as the happily ridiculous Blaze.

Taylor is full of praise for Cage, gushing that "shooting action is boring, shooting car crashes and all that stuff. But shooting a Nic Cage performance is a total adrenaline rush." I can only imagine!

Sadly Eva Mendes is not returning, but Italian actress and singer Violante Placido (The American) is on hand to reduce the testosterone a tad, as the mother of a boy that the devil wants to possess. The film also stars the brilliant Idris Elba (Thor, The Losers) as an alcoholic warrior monk, and the devil is played this time around by Ciarán Hinds (Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows).

It'll be interesting to see what Goyer and Taylor have changed about Ghost Rider's history and characterisation, and how he shapes up against the comic version: most recently seen in Marvel's Shadowland mini-event.

Crank 2

At the very end of the interview though, Taylor also teases about the posibility of a Crank 3 film. Asked if a third film was on the horizon, Taylor replied: "It could be. The stars have to align, you know. It was almost going to happen but the schedule wasn’t right and the money wasn’t right. It’s kind of like that movie has to get willed into existence at some point, by enough people who want to see it. But maybe on iPhone."

As a major Jason Statham and Crank fangirl, this would make me a very happy bunny indeed. Ahem.
